Step 1: Teaching Pre-Writing Strategies

what you do before writing is just as important as what you do during writing

Overview: Once a writing topic has been identified, pre-writing strategies are used to generate and organize ideas. Seven pre-writing strategies are described here: list 3, brainstorm, brainstorm and group, power write, outlining, web and brainstorm, and turn to a neighbor. Pre-writing strategies should be taught explicitly using the elements of effective skills instruction. Use a poster to display pre-writing strategies.

This is an excerpt from my book, Being and Becoming Teachers of Writing: A Meaning-Based Approach to Writing Instruction, published by Routledge.
